چکیده

PURPOSE We aimed to determine the effective dose given to patients during neuroradiological C-arm computed tomography (CT) procedures. MATERIALS AND METHODS Measurements were performed on 48 patients using a dose-area product (DAP) meter. A PC-based Monte Carlo program (PCXMC, STUK, Helsinki, Finland) was used to calculate the effective dose from the DAP values of each patient. Organ doses were also measured with thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLDs) using a human-shaped phantom. RESULTS The difference between the organ doses measured using TLDs and PCXMC was not significant (P > 0.05). The mean DAP for 48 patients was 9.41±2.50 Gy·cm2; the mean effective dose for all procedures was 0.30±0.08 mSv. The coefficient for the correlation (R2) between the DAP and the effective dose was 0.97. The conversion factor between the effective dose and DAP was 0.030-0.035 mSv·Gy(-1)·cm(-2). CONCLUSION DAP can be used as a dose indicator to calculate the organ dose and effective dose of patients based on Monte Carlo simulation. This method can provide important information on the absorbed dose and enhance the radiation protection of patients during C-arm CT procedures.

Assessment of Patient Absorbed Radiation Dose during Hysterosalpingography: A Pilot Study in Southwest Nigeria

Background: Hysterosalpingography (HSG) is an indispensable tool for diagnosing infertility in females. The procedure exposes female reproductive organs to ionizing radiation as the genitals are irradiated during the process. Investigating patient absorbed dose during the procedures is essential for effective radiological protection of the patient. Objective: This study aims to investigat...

Comparing Radiation Dose from Conventional Fluoroscopy to Intraoperative Cone Beam CT (O-arm) during Percutaneous Lesioning Procedures of the Gasserian Ganglion

INTRODUCTION The use of intraoperative CT-guidance during the percutaneous treatment of trigeminal neuralgia has become increasingly popular due to the greater ease of foramen ovale cannulation and decreased procedure times. Concerns regarding radiation dose to the patient, however, remain unaddressed. We sought to compare the emitted radiation dose from fluoroscopy with intraoperative CT for t...

C-arm rotation as a method for reducing peak skin dose in interventional cardiology

PURPOSE Prolonged interventional cardiology (IC) procedures may result in radiation-induced skin injury, a potentially preventable cause of patient morbidity. Rotating the C-arm during an IC procedure may reduce this risk, although the methods by which the technique can be practically applied remains unexplored. A previous study demonstrated that C-arm rotation often increases peak skin dose (P...

Patient dose resulting from CT examinations in Yazd, Iran

Background: With the introduction of computed tomography in diagnostic radiology a new and fundamentally different imaging modality has become available. Meanwhile, it is clear that the absorbed doses by the patients during CT were relatively high in comparison with those of other diagnostic radiology techniques. The aim of this survey was to determine the average absorbed dose in Yazd provin...

Uncertainties in effective dose estimation for CT transmission scan in total body PET-CT imaging with Auto mA3D tube current modulation

Background: Positron Emission Tomography-Computed Tomography (PET-CT) is a useful hybrid imaging modality in the diagnosis of various malignancies. This modality imposes almost 20 mSv radiation dose to the patient. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the uncertainties in calculated CT effective dose in TUBE CURRENT MODULATION-activated scans by Impact-Dose software.  Materials and ...
